Project Title Breathe for Hot Flashes
Researcher Janet Carpenter, PhD, RN, FAAN, Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis
Study Summary There is not a lot known about how women can manage hot flashes without hormones. Some breathing methods have helped hot flashes, but more research is needed to see if these breathing methods can be put into widespread use.
Who Can Participate? You can join the Breathe for Hot Flashes study if you match ALL of these MAIN categories:
• You are 18 years of age or older
• You have daily hot flashes and are interested in hot flash treatment
• You are peri- or postmenopausal
• You are able to read, write, and speak English
• You live within 60 miles of Indianapolis or can drive to the IUPUI campus for all study visits.
• You are in good general physical and mental health
• You are a breast cancer survivor with non-metastatic disease.
• You must have no history of other cancers
• You must have completed surgery, radiation and chemotherapy at least four weeks prior to starting the study. It is okay to be on tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitor, or similar medications.
The researcher may ask you additional questions to be sure that this study is a right fit for you.
What Does Participation Involve? If you join the Breathe For Hot Flashes study, you will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to one of three groups. Group One will be mailed a CD and printed instructions on how to use the breathing technique. Group Two will be mailed a DVD and printed instructions on a different breathing program. Group Three will get a letter but will not be taught either breathing technique until the very end of the study.
Participants in the study will be asked questions about their health, medications, and hot flash treatments they have tried. All groups will take part in three study visits. For some women, four visits will be required. At some of the study visits you will be asked to wear a strap across your chest for 15 minutes to evaluate your breathing. Each study visit will last 30-60 minutes. These visits can be done in your home or on the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus.
The researchers need to enroll 91 breast cancer survivors.
