Tips and Angles
Here are a few “talking points” for those who need them in order to draft your post, and some tips on some angles you can use when writing about the Army of Women. While some of you are pro-bloggers and have been at this awhile, there may be some new bloggers out there just getting their feet wet. So, we prepared some themes you could use when you’re writing your blog. Here is a menu below of what we’ve included below:

ANGLES
Story Angles for Your Post
Not sure how to start your post? Unclear how to personalize your post while educating women on the importance of signing up for the Army of Women? These angles might assist you in communicating with your audience. When drafting your post, be sure you include information from the Talking Points listed below! You can use these angles to share your personal story with your community or as a way to encourage your community to share personal stories about breast cancer. By generating the conversation, you have the power to encourage all women to sign up for the Army of Women.
SURVIVOR ANGLE: Are YOU a survivor or are you currently diagnosed with breast cancer?
(This can be your own personal survivorship story or a call to action to your readers to share their story)
Tell YOUR story about how you beat the odds or how you are currently FIGHTING the odds and battling it out every day to overcome breast cancer. Link your story by letting your readers know why you signed up for the Army of Women, yourself, and why it is important that everyone take the next step to sign up for the Army of Women.
PERSONAL CONNECTION ANGLE: Do you or did you know someone affected by breast cancer or do you know someone currently fighting breast cancer today? Someone close to you?
Relay your story about the person close to you and let your readers know what they mean to you. Share why your experience encouraged you to sign up for the Army of Women and why it is important that all women over the age of 18 sign up today.
SCIENCE ADVANCEMENT: If your blog is targeted more towards a medical-minded community, you might consider talking about the ways Army of Women is advancing research.
The unique vision behind the Army of Women should actually “sell itself”. We are using the internet as a tool to connect researchers with women, like you. This is a groundbreaking initiative, something that has never been done until now, and something that has already prompted over 337,000 women to sign up to date. By reshaping the way that research has been done for decades, we are advancing the outcome. It used to take researchers anywhere up to FIVE YEARS to recruit for crucial studies. With the Army of Women, we have been able to expedite the process, providing subjects for researchers in less than FORTY EIGHT HOURS! We are changing the way scientists conduct research, and as a result, will ultimately vastly yield quicker results.
PREVENTION ANGLE: You might consider talking about the ways the Army of Women is engaging scientists and shifting the focus of research to PREVENTION:
How can we cure something if we don’t know what we’re curing? Plain and simple, the Army of Women hopes to STOP CANCER BEFORE IT STARTS. By enlisting ONE MILLION WOMEN to participate in breast cancer research, we will be able to finally take the research out of the lab and look at real women. This will enable us to finally find the CAUSES of breast cancer and ultimately figure out how to prevent it all together. BILLIONS of dollars have been spent on breast cancer research to date, but we still don’t know what CAUSES it. While many advances in treatment have been made, our goal is to eradicate it once and for all, by preventing it in the first place. We discovered that cervical cancer was caused by a virus, the HUMAN papillomavirus . The way we discovered the cause of cervical cancer was by studying WOMEN. With a lot less money, and in a lot less time, we now have a cure because we now know WHAT to cure. We need to follow the same path and move breast cancer beyond a cure.
STUDIES: As a supporting blogger, we encourage all bloggers to post our current studies:
You will receive e-blasts, just as every AOW member does, alerting you of new studies that the AOW is recruiting for. You can post each study that we inform AOW members about. All current studies are also included here.
ARMY OF WOMEN TALKING POINTS
Here are some general talking points you can use when writing your blog:
- The Love/Avon Army of Women (AOW) is a unique program of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit breast cancer research organization. The program is funded through a grant from the Avon Foundation for Women. The AOW provides an opportunity for men and women to take part in breast cancer research studies aimed at determining the causes of breast cancer–and how to prevent it. The AOW is a groundbreaking initiative that connects breast cancer researchers via the internet with women who are willing to participate in a wide variety of research studies. The goal of the Army of Women is to recruit ONE MILLION MEN AND WOMEN of all ages and ethnicities, including breast cancer survivors and those who have never had breast cancer.
- Men are able to sign up for the Army of Women.
- Make sure that women know they are signing up to be added to the Army of Women database to hear about research projects–signing up for the Army of Women does NOT sign them up for a study yet.
- The Army of Women Research Studies are prevention based, not clinical trials.
- Participants must be 18 and older—but we need ALL ethnicities–ALL ages, we need healthy women, women with cancer and women who are survivors.
- Make sure that you emphasize that there is absolutely NO COST to join and take part in something this important–we are not asking for donations, just for women to sign up and agree to hear about studies. Participation in any of our studies is ALWAYS, COMPLETELY voluntary.
- Participants will be involved in important research to discover THE CAUSE of breast cancer–how to stop it before it starts.
- Make sure you stress that women have the ability to participate only in those projects that interest them. They can opt to decline any study invitation, or accept any invitation of their choosing.
- Current Projects: You can familiarize yourself with our current studies, what they require and what they are looking by reviewing our current, open studies.
- Type of commitment: Studies will require a variety of different things (women can be asked anything from filling out an online questionnaire to being asked for a blood sample). It all varies according to the type of study.
GETTING YOUR READERS TO NOT ONLY SIGN UP FOR THE AOW, BUT TO ALSO GET INVOLVED IN SPREADING THE MESSAGE:
- Make sure you encourage your readers to not only sign up for the AOW, but to also recruit their friends/family by urging them to use the "invite a friend" link.
- Make sure you include 1 or 2 of our PSAs (choose your favorite) within your post and encourage your readers to share the PSAs. Here are the links:
